A New Chapter Begins:

The Santa Barbara Master Chorale is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. William "Bill" Cutter as its next Artistic Director, beginning with the 2026–2027 season.


An internationally respected conductor, educator, composer, and choral artist, Dr. Cutter brings decades of artistic leadership and musical excellence to Santa Barbara. His distinguished career includes leadership roles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston Conservatory at Berklee, the Boston Lyric Opera, and the renowned Tanglewood Festival Chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has prepared choruses for some of the world's leading conductors and has inspired generations of singers through his work as a teacher, conductor, and mentor.

Known for his ability to combine artistic excellence with deep musical expression, Dr. Cutter has built a reputation for creating meaningful musical experiences that connect singers and audiences alike. His work spans masterworks, contemporary choral repertoire, innovative collaborations, and educational initiatives, all grounded in a belief that music has the power to inspire, unite, and transform.

Dr. Cutter succeeds Dr. David Lozano Torres, whose four-year tenure has elevated the artistic profile of the Santa Barbara Master Chorale and left a lasting impact on singers and audiences throughout the region. The Chorale celebrates Dr. Lozano Torres's contributions while looking ahead with great anticipation to the opportunities that lie ahead under Dr. Cutter's leadership.

As Artistic Director, Dr. Cutter will guide the artistic vision of the organization, shape future programming, and continue the Chorale's commitment to presenting powerful performances that enrich the cultural life of Santa Barbara.
